Association of postalimentary lipemia with atherosclerotic manifestations BJMBR
Tentor,J.; Nakamura,R.T.; Gidlund,M.; Barros-Mazon,S.; Harada,L.M.; Zago,V.S.; Oba,J.F.; Faria,E.C. de.
We identified different lipemic and metabolic responses after the ingestion of a standardized meal by healthy adults and related them to atherosclerotic markers. Samples from 60 normolipidemic adults were collected before and after a liquid meal (40 g fat/m² body surface) at 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 h for measurements of lipids, free fatty acids (FFA), insulin, cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP), autoantibodies to epitopes of oxidized LDL (oxLDL Ab), lipolytic activities, and apolipoprotein E polymorphism. Mean carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) was determined by Doppler ultrasound. The volunteers were classified into early (N = 39) and late (N = 31) triacylglycerol (TAG) responders to the test meal. Late responders showed lower HDL cholesterol...

Propolis effect on streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Sartori,DRS; Kawakami,CL; Orsatti,CL; Sforcin,JM.
Propolis is one of the hive products that has been used extensively in folk medicine, due to its several biological and pharmacological properties. Besides, propolis-containing products have been intensely marketed by the pharmaceutical industry and health-food stores. This work was carried out in order to investigate whether propolis treatment could revert the metabolic alterations of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Animals were kept in metabolic cages and diabetes was induced by a single dose of streptozotocin (35 mg/kg, IV). After a week, rats with glycemia higher than 230 mg/dL were divided into two groups and treated with ethanolic extract of propolis (10 and 90 mg/kg, PO) for seven days. Glycemia and free fatty acids were determined, as well as...

Replacing soybean oil with increasing levels of soybean acid oil in diets of coturnix quails (Coturnix coturnix coturnix) and the effects on egg quality Anais da ABC (AABC)
ROLL,ALINE A.P.; FORGIARINI,JULIANA; XAVIER,EDUARDO G.; LOPES,DÉBORA C.N.; ROLL,VICTOR F.B.; RUTZ,FERNANDO.
ABSTRACT The effects of increasing levels of soybean acid oil in diets of quails on the quality of eggs were evaluated over a period of 56 days. A completely randomized design with five treatment levels of soybean acid oil (0, 2, 4, 6, and 8%) as a replacer for soybean oil and eight replicates of two quails each were used. A total of 240 fresh eggs were used for quality analysis, and 400 eggs were stored at 23ºC over a period of 0, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days for analysis of shelf-life. Polynomial regression and ANOVA with repeated measurements and Tukey´s tests were used. Soybean acid oil linearly increased the intensity of red (a* = -5.26 + 0.14 x, R2 = 0.89, P = 0.01) and yellow (b* = 42.32 + 0.44 x, R2 = 0.88 P = 0.01). All other variables of egg quality...

SCORPION ANTIVENOM REVERSES METABOLIC, ELECTROCARDIOGRAPHIC, AND HORMONAL DISTURBANCES CAUSED BY THE INDIAN RED SCORPION Mesobuthus tamulus concanesis, Pocock ENVENOMATION J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
MURTHY,K. RADHA KRISHNA; ZARE,M. ABBAS.
Electrocardiographic (ECG) changes were induced in dogs by injection of scorpion venom from Mesobuthus tamulus concanesis, Pocock. Venom (3 mg/kg body weight) was given subcutaneously (SQ) while 10 ml of scorpion antivenom (SAV) was administered intravenously (IV) to experimental dogs. Group 1 received only the venom; Groups 2, 3, and 4 received SAV at 0, 30, and 60 min, respectively, following envenoming. Thick, ropy and profuse salivation; muscle fasciculation; clonus and tetany-like contractions; frequent urination; and bowel emptying sometimes stained with bile and occasionally blood and bile were observed 20-25 minutes after envenoming. Following envenoming, hyperglycemia, increase in free fatty acid (FFA) levels, and reduction in triglyceride levels...
